Whitehaven Festival

Whitehaven, on the western side of the Lakes close to Ennerdale Water, was a fishing village owned by The Priory of St Bees until the Dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. In the 1600s Whitehaven was developed as a Port to export coal.

In 1660 the right for a Whitehaven Fair was granted to the lord of the manor. This Whitehaven Fair was held every year & attracted folk from all over the Lakes.

Whitehaven has some amazing connections with the United States including being the home town of President George Washington’s father & Home Port of John Paul Jones, the founder of the US Navy. Whitehaven was also one of the leading ports in the early days of trading with  America.

In 1998, the Whitehaven Festival took up the gauntlet of the Olde Faire to recreate its fun & excitement.

The Whitehaven Festival is held every year in June & has been outstandingly successful. The Festival has grown rapidly to become one of the top Tourist attractions in the Lakes with fireworks, Red Arrows Air shows, live music, celebrity chefs and so much more.

Come, visit & support the exciting Whitehaven Festival on the edge of the beautiful Lakes.
